New Cloth Diapers

If you've been reading my blog long, you'll already know that I've cloth diapered Malachi since he was very little. I had some definite successes and failures along the way though. My mom has sewed almost all of our diapers (click here to see some pictures!) and when Malachi was really little we had some leakage issues. Those seem to be all resolved and we've used them ever since.

The smallest size cloth diapers I currently have though, would not fit Zachary right now. They are probably better for a baby about 3 months or so, I'd guess. I am definitely interested in getting started with my cloth diapering earlier this time around, so my mom made us some new tiny diapers!

Aren't they cute?? =) So far we only have a couple, but they are working well. I just have to remember to change them more often! It's hard to remember how often these tiny babies poop!! Just another reason to use cloth though... I've gone through several packages already of disposable diapers!

Want to read more about why we cloth diaper or how?

Two Sweet Potatoes Cloth Wipes Review & Giveaway

I had the privilege of being contacted by Nikki of Two Sweet Potatoes to do a review and giveaway of her cloth baby wipes.

Nikki has two little  boys who have inspired her to make healthy products for her family - including things like cloth wipes made from organic bamboo velour like the ones I tried out!

Everything in Two Sweet Potatoes shop is lovely as well as functional, which I think we can appreciate as parents. Not only does she carry organic cloth wipes, but burp cloths, bibs and clothing.

The Review:
I received a set of Organic Bamboo Velour Wipes in apple and turquoise.
The first thing I loved was the packaging. As soon as I pulled them out of the package I was impressed with how they were tissue-wrapped with a logo sticker.
Next, I opened the tissue and there was a tag with the fiber content (80% organic bamboo, 20% organic cotton) and washing instructions.

Then the real test - actual use. These wipes are a great size measuring 7.25x4.25 inches. They will fit into a warmer or container without needing to be folded. I tend to just leave mine out on the changing table with my dipes because I'm lazy. They are the perfect size for avoiding sprays (those with boys understand that statement) or wiping damp bottoms.

My son grabbed a wipe one day and started rubbing his face and saying, "mmm.....!" These wipes are the softest things you've ever felt! Perfect for little, sensitive bottoms or noses! He had a cold while we were reviewing these wipes and they were perfect for wiping his runny nose and I wasn't worried about the wipe irritating his sensitive skin.

AND they come in a lovely array of colors!
Natural, orange, turquoise, apple, orchid or fuchsia - and you can custom order color combinations!
A few other Fast Facts about these wipes from Nikki's etsy shop:
*2 Ply, Double-sided organic bamboo velour
*Ultra soft for sensitive skin
*Eco-friendly diaper wipes
*Washcloths
*Removing makeup
*Works well just with water or with your favorite wipes solution
*These wipes are hand finished. I do not use chemical fray block

To top it off, the owner of Two Sweet Potatoes, Nikki, is wonderful to work with and I can just imagine how great her customer service is to her customers.

The Giveaway!

Nikki is giving away one set of her cloth wipes
to one Little Sprout Growing reader!

Cloth Review: Trimsies Diapers and Trainers (& Giveaway!)

This is a very unique review/giveaway post! I'm pretty excited about it! I will have 3 reviews in this post - a Trimsies Diaper review, a Trimsies Trainer review and a Trimsies Pattern reivew.

I first heard about a Trimsies diaper on one of the mommy blogs that I read. I was intrigued by the mom's review, so I Googled Trimsies and found the Trimsies website where I discovered that you can buy a pattern to make your own Trimsies diaper! Awesome!

You can either buy the Trimsies Diaper pattern for $8.00 for your personal use OR you can purchase a 12-month Trimsies license for $50 (Go here for more information on the licensing process)

My mom and I decided we'd try it out. She was already sewing some diapers for me, so she had most of the materials on hand. She downloaded the 18-page pattern and tried it out.

The Diaper Review:
My Trimsies diaper is very trim. The waist dips under the belly and is side-snapping. My mom has also modified her Trimsies diaper to use Aplix tabs instead of snaps and I like it  both ways. This particular one below has the PUL sandwiched between the lining and a cute flannel fabric. The exciting part about being able to make your own is all the creative things you can do with your diapers. Go to the Gallery on the Trimsies website to see some great examples.

The pattern includes a small, medium and large sizes. My son is 30lb and currently wearing the large size. I would say that in general, these diapers run slightly smaller than other brands we've tried, but that also helps with the trimness factor.

This is an All-in-One (AIO) diaper, meaning the cover and soakers are all one piece. This is very easy AND the way it is designed allows for clean washing and quick drying times. I have no problem drying these diapers with my pocket diapers and pull-out inserts and having them come out dry together. As you can see the soaker is attached at the front of the diaper only, allowing it to come away from the diaper during washing and drying while still staying in one piece.

Pros: Overall this is a great diaper - it has good absorbency and it fits nicely under clothes because it's not bulky. The side snaps allow you to adjust the waist and legs separately. The design makes for easy washing and drying.
Cons: Smaller fit - may not fit babies as long as other brands.

The Trainer Review:
Trimsies also sells a pattern for a cloth trainer for $8.00! Now this is something we are going to be needing in the near future. My son just turned two and we are starting to think about potty training. Monique from Trimsies graciously offered me the Trimsies trainer pattern, so I could do a review on it!

The trainer pattern is a 54-page document and sizes include Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. Pattern pieces and instructions are provided for making basic style trainers, low-rise, overnight, snapping, and trainers bound using fold-over elastic.

My mom made me up a trainer.

This is a Medium size, which fits my 30lb toddler pretty well. Medium is supposed to be about the size of 2T, which is what he wears, so I think that's just about right on.
As you can see there is elastic around the waistband and leg openings, and it's still a pretty trim fit. His clothes fit great over it. We aren't actually potty-training quite yet, so I didn't leave it on long enough to find out how it absorbed, but I can't see that there would be any leaking issues; it looks pretty leak-proof to me.

My mom had some different colored PUL left over, so she made the side panels a different color, which is kind of fun. Another example of why it's kind of fun to make your own!

Here's a look at it from the inside and without being on a child.

Overall, I'm excited about using it. It looks like it'll be a great trainer for potty-training and my son kind of liked  getting to pull it on himself! AND I think it seems more like "underwear" than a Pull-Up would.

The Pattern Review:
I didn't personally sew these up - my mom did. So I asked her to write up a little review on what she thought of the patterns, instructions, etc.
I’ve made both the diaper pattern and the trainer.  Both patterns were well-drafted and had good instructions.   After making the diaper, I feel the pattern runs a little small.  I made it both with the snaps as designed and one that had an Aplix closure.
The trainer was easy to make.  I would have appreciated a little more information on choice of inner fabrics and suggestions for the soaker.  I made it with a suede cloth inner and a couple layers of warm and natural for the soaker, but the next one I think I’ll use either Zorb or micro terry for the soaker, a PUL outside, and a flannel or knit fabric for the liner.  I think using the suede cloth defeats the purpose of the child feeling wet.
My mom said there wasn't much in the way of fabric suggestions on the pattern, but after a little searching, I realized that there is more pattern info on the Trimsies website. There is a whole page on Fabric Recommendations

Also, in Monique's Etsy shop, SewMeAGarden, she sells fun things like these labels and clear elastic that may be harder to find other places.

So there you go! Are you a mom who can sew? Be creative and make your own cloth diapers with a Trimsies pattern!

What I've Learned

In the two years that I've been cloth diapering, I feel like I've learned a few things. It is interesting to me how many people are cloth diapering now - just in the two years that I've been doing it, I've gone from the ONLY person I knew cloth diapering to one of several people I know. It's encouraging. =)

I thought I'd share a few things I think I've learned:

1. Keep Trying
I don't cloth diaper full-time. I am at the point now where I cloth diaper most of the time. I have my own personal reasons for not doing it all the time (which I won't go into here), but I currently use cloth at-home during the day, nap time and short trips out. I don't use cloth when I'm going to be gone for hours, we're going to a play date or church and bedtime.

Now, I have had some ups and downs with cloth. There have been times when I got totally out of the habit of using cloth because I was just lazy or when my diapers have seemed to leak all the time and I got super frustrated. It was just easier to grab the disposables and not have to worry about washing them later or dealing with the mess from the leaks. I've seen quite a few comments on other blogs and message boards saying that they just gave up at that point and never went back to cloth.

I say - it's never too late to go back! Or to start for that matter! Sometimes I just have to give myself a little shake and a pep talk and get back into it. Figure out why we're having a leaking problem or whatever - a lot of times I think it was just my skinny son and when he grew a little the leak went away.

2. Aplix vs. Snaps
People are pretty opinionated about which type of closure they like on their diapers. Personally I think the Aplix (like velcro) is easier to use, but many people like snaps. My suggestion: get a few diapers in both types and try them out and find out what works best for your family and your child.

3. Cloth Wipes
If you want to go really green and reduce your baby's exposure to chemicals, use cloth wipes! They are wonderful for your baby's skin and work really well to remove the poo. I use them off and on - not consistently. There are some awesome recipes for cleaners out there on the web. When I am using cloth wipes, I have a stack of dry wipes and a spray bottle with my cleanser in it and I spray the wipe before cleaning my baby's bottom and it seems to work really well.
I've discovered that using cloth wipes is not something I'm very good about doing. Although I DO use our cloth wipes for nose wiping, which is also a wonderful use. haha

4. Wetbags
GET TWO. I am sorry to say that after two years, I am only now investing in a second wetbag. I should have done it a LONG time ago. I have a plastic garbage can with a lid from WalMart that I use as my diaper pail. Then I have a Wahamies pain liner inside. This works great, but when I'm washing and drying my diapers I really need another wetbag to put my soiled diapers in. For my second wetbag, I got a hanging one and placed it in the bathroom where I clean off my diapers for easy access.
If you are going anywhere outside your home while using your cloth diapers, I also suggest investing in a small zippered wetbag. These are wonderful for all sorts of things - including, but not limited too, soiled cloth diapers. I just keep mine in my diaper bag and if there's any kind of messy problem (a blow-out perhaps or puke?) the soiled clothing goes into the wetbag.

5. Diaper Sprayers
Diaper sprayers are a wonderful investment. I'm not really sure how people live by just dunking their diapers in the toilet, but diapers sprayers make removing the poo super easy. The sprayer connects to your toilet and you can just spray the sticky poo right off the diaper. Definitely worth it, in my opinion.

Cloth Review: Sweet Cheeks Diaper Wash & Pail Powder

Becca from My Posh Nest was nice enough to take some time out of her busy schedule to mail me a sample of her awesome Sweet Cheeks Pail Powder and Sweet Cheeks Cloth Diaper Wash for review!

I was really impressed by both of these products. First of all they came in cheery packaging, which is always a bonus when you're going to be using it for something as un-fun as diaper laundry.

Second of all, IT WORKS GREAT! I would say I like this stuff better than I liked my trial of Rockin' Green.
On the back of this postcard, Becca send some washing instructions. I followed them exactly and my wash came out wonderful - no stink and a little sweet smelling!

One little Tablespoon of Sweet Cheeks Cloth Laundry Wash does it - which means it is a great deal. It's only $7.00 for a 45/90 bag of detergent.
More great things about this Sweet Cheeks:
  • It is handmade from all natural, vegan - friendly, super wonderful ingredients that will get your diapers nice and clean and keep them smelling fresh.
  • It is free of enzymes, dyes and optical brighteners
  • It is clean rinsing, which helps save water on extra rinsing.
  • It comes in a bunch of awesome scents like: Naked Baby (Unscented), Peppermint Forest, Sleepytime, Monkey Farts, Apple Mango Tango, Sweet Clementine, Cotton & Blossoms, Buttercream Cupcake, Cucumber Melon, Baby Bee & Pink Sugar
I got a sample of Buttercream Cupcake, which as I said, left a nice sweet smell to my diapers. I didn't know my diapers could smell like that!

Sweet Cheeks Pail Powder is also a great product. I had never used a pail powder before and I was pleased with how this worked. I just sprinkle in a little powder out of the shaker onto my dirty diapers every time I throw I diaper in the pail and it helps keep down the stink.
It comes in a 8oz refillable shaker for $4.00 and is available in 5 different scents. I received a
sample of Baby Bee, which had a nice clean and slightly sweet scent.

You can also purchase a Cloth Diaper Laundry Package for $14.00, which includes a full size bag of Diaper Wash, 8oz shaker of Pail Powder, a handmade wool dryer ball and a little wooden scoop for your diaper washing!

I think this would make an awesome starter package for someone - or maybe as a gift to a new cloth diapering mama?

Check out more from MyPostNest here on her website or
check her out on Facebook!

Dirty Diaper Laundry

The most common thing people ask me about when they hear I cloth diaper my son is, "but what about the dirty diaper laundry!?" Most ask this in kind of a horrified loud whisper - like its something truly terrible.

Honestly, if you have a baby - you're going to have dirty laundry (translated dirty=poopy). I'm sorry, but if you think that just because you use disposable diapers you are somehow going to avoid dealing with poop and pee, then you are greatly mistaken.

Obviously there are a few more steps to cleaning diapers rather than just soiled clothing, but I'm just sayin....

I personally use a Wal-Mart garbage can with a lid with a Wahamies pail liner inside.

Just take off the diaper, separate the pieces (I do this right away, so I don't have to mess with anything later) and toss it all in the pail if it's just wet.

If the diaper is poopy, you'll have to rinse it off in the toilet first and this is where a diaper sprayer comes in super handy, but then I just separate the pieces and toss it in the same way.

I usually try to do my diaper laundry every two or three days. I just pull the whole liner out of the garbage can, run down  the stairs, and dump them out into the washing machine (tossing the liner in with them).

Washing process:
One COLD rinse to loosen up and wash away any remaining yuckies.
One HOT cycle with detergent.
One additional COLD rinse to remove any detergent residue (residue can make diapers less absorbent)

Then just dry and assemble your diapers for use. I like to assemble mine before I take them back upstairs to the diaper changing area so they're ready to use right away.

That's a pretty basic system - you can pre-treat your diapers before throwing them into your pail with an enzyme cleaner to help avoid smells and stains or shake some pail powder into your pail to help with the stinkies inbetween wash days, but these are optional steps.

I like to run a rinse cycle with bleach in my washing machine after I do diaper laundry to kill off any lingering germs.

Honesty - it barely takes any time. It might sound like it does, but obviously most of the time the laundry is in either the washer or dryer and you can be doing something else. The most time consuming part, in my opinion, is the stuffing of the clean diapers after they've been washed - and even that only takes me about 10 minutes.

Question, Comments or Suggestions about your cloth diaper washing routine?
I'd love to hear it!

Cloth Review: Rockin Green Detergent (& Giveaway!)

Rockin Green Cloth Diaper and Laundry Detergent sent me a sample of their awesome detergent for a review.

I usually just use my regular laundry detergent when I wash my diapers. I make my own detergent and have my own diapers for the most part, so I don't have to worry about negating a warrenty.

I never had much of a stink problem until about 6 months ago. When my son was around 18 months old, all of a sudden, his diapers started to stink more. I don't know if it was more of a concentration of urine or what, but clearly my regular detergent wasn't cutting it.

I received a sample of Rockin Green's Rage Against the Raspberry scent in the Classic Formula. I decided to just throw in my soiled diapers and see how it did. I used the lesser recommended amount and I think I should have used more, but it did pretty good. The second time I washed my diapers, I used a little more detergent and they smelled wonderful!

I'm sure that if I did a Rockin' Green soak and "de-funked" my diapers originally it would have been even better the first time. I was pretty impressed! Rockin' Green is supposed to be clean rinsing, so you may be able to eliminate extra rinses from your routine!

Another great thing about Rockin' Green (other than the de-funk factor) is that it's made with safe phosphate-free ingredients, which according to them means its gentler on the planet and little ones! One of the reasons why I make my own laundry detergent is that I can control what goes into it, so I like the fact that Rockin' Green is a safe product.

As I said, I received some Rage Against the Raspberry scent, but Rockin' Green detergent comes in SIX different scents and one unscented version. It also comes in three formula's depending on what kind of water you have - hard, soft or classic.

Their website http://rockingreensoap.com/ also offers some other helpful laundry and cloth diapering items like, diaper sprayer, laundry scoop, dryer balls, etc.

Giveaway!
Rockin Green has generously offered a 45/90 load bag of detergent in the winners choice of scent and formula to a Little Sprout Growing reader!

Looking back - I wish I had...

Looking back, I can see a couple things I would have done differently.

I would have started earlier. I was nervous using cloth diapers at first. I was not really sure what I was doing or how well it was going to work, so I'd use them in spurts. If something went wrong, I wouldn't try it again for a few days (or longer).

I'm not sure what happened, but along the way I got braver. If I had another baby right now, I'd wait until the meconium was gone and then I would start using my cloth immediately. I realize now that my son was a little on the small (as in skinny legs) side and I think that may have contributed to the leaks. I think I would be more apt to figure out what the cause was instead of just giving up.

I think I would make more of an effort to fix the problems and not just give up for awhile.

Secondly, I definitely would have invested in another wetbag right away. I still don't have a second one (although it's on my MUST-GET list) and while I am washing my diapers, I have to just put my dirty diapers on the floor or in the bathtub until my one pail liner is done drying! Silly! and kinda gross! A second wetbag would have solved this problem and made my life so much easier. I have one that is a pail liner, but I need to get a hanging one for my bathroom

One other thing I didn't realize was that when my son got over a year, the stink factor greatly increased. I'm not sure if something in the make-up of the urine actually changed or if it was just that he was peeing larger quantities, but somewhere between 12-18 months old it got bad. I had to move the diaper pail out of his room because if it sat in his closed room all night it would reek. Then I discovered pail powders - sprinkling some baking soda or a pail powder in the diaper pail would greatly reduce the stink of the soiled diapers. Obviously, washing your diapers more often will also keep down the stink, but if I'm working a lot or something, sometimes I don't wash them as often as I should.

Any questions? I'd love to hear suggestions, stories or comments.

Cloth Diaper Review: Wahmies One-Size

I received the Wahmies One-Size diaper as a blog giveaway winner! I was pretty excited to have the chance to try out this diaper because it is so unique!

This is a pocket diaper with the outside made from a PUL outer layer and a very soft polyester velour lining. It is extremely easy to stuff and remove the soaker.

(photo - Malachi wearing diaper)

The Wahmies One-Size has 4 rise settings (snaps) and still fits my 30lb toddler. It comes with a very nice bamboo and cotton "fold to fit" insert that you can fold to customize to fit the needs of your child. I have found the insert to be very absorbent. This is the only diaper I have with a bamboo insert and I found it surprisingly thin. I was afraid my son would soak right through it, but it seems to hold a lot of liquid! =)

The most unique part of the Wahmies One-Size is that instead of the usual snaps or Velcro closure at the waist, there are hooks and loops.

I go back and forth about what I think about these "quick hooks". They definitely allow for a wide range of fit. If you have a child who you've had a difficult time finding a diaper that fits properly, this would probably be a wonderful diaper to try!

Personally, I find the hook and loops a little cumbersome on a wiggly toddler and my husband refuses to even attempt it. Putting the diaper on does not seem to cause me as much trouble as taking it off - as the hooks do their job VERY WELL and I have a hard time un-hooking them while the diaper is on my son.

If you have a child who likes to take off their diaper - this would also be an awesome diaper for you. I do not think there is a child out there who could figure out how to un-hook the waistband of this diaper.

Pros: Soft inner lining, excellent fit, absorbent insert
Cons: Depending on your needs, the hook and loop closure could be a pro or con!

Buy it:
The Wahmies One-Size diaper retails at $17.95. Click here to find a list of available retailers!

Disclaimer: This review is my personal and honest opinion. I received this diaper from a blog giveaway and was not compensated by the company in any way. I was not compensated in any way for this review.
