Lately....

So I've been a very bad blogger lately. I know it. I guess I don't have much interesting going on at the moment. =) Or the interesting things is the stuff I'd rather not post about. Although I don't like to be a fake "everything is awesome always!" person, I also don't like to post about sad things, so I think that's taken the wind out of my blogging sails the past couple weeks - that and laziness. =)

Things I have been doing:
  • I've somehow read over 25 books already this year. I've been doing a lot of reviews for authors that don't require posting to a blog, which is nice. I don't mind putting reviews here... but when I don't have a lot of other content it turns into a book-only blog. If you're interested in seeing some of my other reviews, you can follow me on Goodreads or the Little Sprout Facebook page to see those.
  • I've been collecting supplies to make these Survival Candles. I think they will be fun to make with Malachi. I had to get the supplies, PLUS I realized I don't have a metal bowl to use as a double boiler, so I found one for less than $2 at the Goodwill! Yay me!
  • I have also been researching supplies for homemade soap, which was one of my 2015 Goals this year. I've been searching for a cheap immersion blender at Goodwill also, but unfortunately, no luck so far. I could buy one from Walmart, but what if I only do it once?? Then it's ruined for using in real food and I'll have to throw it away.....
Earlier this month, I spent the day with Malachi at his school for his 100th day of school activities and parade. With all the disappointments of early in the school year it was kind of good to see we made it to a milestone!!

We've also had some crazy nice weather here in the PNW - earlier this week it was up in the lower-60s! We lucked out that Malachi's mid-winter break fell on a couple of those days. We set up a playdate with a friend one day and went to the park the next!

Okay, well that is all for now. Now I have to get the little one to nap before I head off to work this afternoon!

Little House on the Prairie

.
Malachi and I are enjoying reading the Little House Books. We've finished Little House in the Big Woods and we just started Little House on the Prairie this afternoon. I loved these books as a kid and I'm hoping Malachi enjoys them as well..

One thing that he's been really intrigued by is that these books are about REAL people. So today as we were reading about the Ingalls family leaving their house in the Big Woods and driving across Lake Pepin on the ice, I remembered I had saved a Pinterest pin about a virtual field trip tour of the Little House sites. It is a little hard for a 5-year-old in our culture to picture what it was like to live in a little cabin the the woods.... or what it was like traveling in a covered wagon for that matter. This site had some great pictures of the actual site where Laura and her family lived in Wisconsin. Even I enjoyed the pictures! I don't think I quite realized how large Lake Pepin is and I cannot imagine crossing it on ice! Yikes!

This is also a great site to find information and pictures about Laura and the places she lived - liwfrontiergirl.com.

Introducting Chapter Books

A couple months back I found a set of the first 10  Magic School Bus chapter books on a local free/wanted/for sale site. I wasn't sure Malachi would be ready for something with only minimal pictures, but he loved watching the Magic School Bus cartoon, so I thought I'd pick them up anyway. I got the set of 10 books for $5 - which considering each book originally cost about that much was a pretty good deal. (This person also sold me over 20 Magic TreeHouse books for another $5!)

Well, come to find out - Malachi loved listening to these books! We've finished the set we have and have started on some new chapter books. We've started Dinosaurs Before Dark #1 in the Magic TreeHouse series and I just got the first Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle book by Betty MacDonald. He does an awesome job of just sitting and listening to the stories. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has even less pictures than either the Magic School Bus or Magic Treehouse.

I am thinking of what other books I might be able to read to him now! This opens up a whole new set of options!

Almost 2014 Already???

Seriously?? Where did this year go!? I can't believe all that has happened this year or fathom how fast it went.

I thought I'd take a look back over my 2013 goals to see how I did.... I didn't think I'd done very well but then I realized I never even made any for this year! Ha! Sooo.... apparently I did pretty well on that list. I DID make a Goodreads goal to read 65 books and as of today I've read 108! I have no idea how I did that!

Fall Into Reading Wrap-Up Post 2012

I cannot believe we've almost come to the end of 2012! Where did this year go??
Well, for this challenge, I set out to finish up my reading goals for 2012 and get some books off my TBR pile. I think I was more successful with the first goal than the second.

My original list (see the original post here):
Finish - The Strong-Willed Child by Dr. James Dobson
Finish - Unlocked by Courtney Milan - COMPLETED
Awakening by Karice Bolton (The Watchers Trilogy #1)- COMPLETED
Persuasion by Jane Austen (2012 Goal book) - COMPLETED
Home Improvement by Charlaine Harris (this one has been on my shelf for awhile)
Divergent by Veronica Roth (Divergent #1) (this has been on my to-read list forever!) - COMPLETED
Out for Blood by Kristen Painter

So, out of these seven books, I completed only four! This seems a little sad, but I did read Persuasion which was one of my 2012 Goals to read one Jane Austen novel this year. Also, I was planning to read Out for Blood but my pre-order has yet to come (!!) which is annoying, so I need to contact the Book Depository to find out where it went - so that was a little beyond my control. I didn't finish The Strong-Willed Child, but I did watch a whole video series on Bringing Up Boys by Dr. Dobson, so I think it might have been a little Dobson overkill to read this book also.

Then there are all the OTHER books I read that I didn't have on my original list:
Legions by Karice Bolton (The Watchers Triology #2)
Insurgent by Veronica Roth (Divergent #2)
Abby: Mail Order Bride by Verna Clay
Promise by Kristie Cook (Soul Savers #1)
The Preacher's Bride by Jody Hedlund
Wool Omnibus (Books #1-5) by Hugh Howey
Unending Devotion by Jody Hedlund
The Doctor's Lady by Jody Hedlund
A Tailor-Made Bride by Karen Witemeyer
A Change of Fortune by Jen Turano
The Apothacary's Daughter by Julie Klassen
Wildflowers from Winter by Katie Ganshert
How Do You Tuck In A Superhero? by Rachel Balducci

So I had 13 books that I read that were not on my original list, which makes for a total of 17 during the course of Fall Into Reading 2012. I think that was a pretty successful reading challenge - even if I didn't read the books I was planning on!

Reading Goal Completed!!

I've done it! Even having a baby this summer, I've managed to finish my goal of 50 books read this year. This includes Sisters of the Quilt which was a Trilogy  but only counted as one and Wool which was five novellas in one. I was not sure I could do it - as you can see from my reading list,  I didn't finish a single book in July. AND I still have a couple weeks left - 60 books for next year maybe? =)

    A Jane Austen Bunco

Once a month I get together with a lovely group of girls and we play bunco together. There are 12 of us and each month we meet at a different person's house. We always have fun theme (well... some of us are more creative than others... but it's always fun).
We've been doing this for about six years now - and I must say it's getting harder and harder to come up with unique themes. Some of my past themes have been - Barnyard Bunco, Pirate Bunco and Mad Hatter Tea Bunco.

This year I finally decided on a Jane Austen themed party. First of all, can I tell you how horrified I am that some people had no idea who Jane Austen IS?? How is that possible? Don't they at least watch movies? Anyway.... it was a little more thrown together than my usual bunco because of my recent move and the fact that I worked the entire weekend before, but I think it still worked out fairly well.

My mom helped me out and painted Jane Austen book quotes on 12 mugs. We bought a variety of white mugs at the Dollar Tree and she used a Sharpie to write the quote. Then she baked the mugs in 400 degree oven to make the ink permanent. We love how it turned out!
I also made up some cardstock bookmarks with quotes printed on some velum and tied at the top with a pretty ribbon.
Each person got to take a mug and a bookmark home with them. My mom made me up some  fun banners from a thrift store copy of Northanger Abbey.
This one was hanging from my mantle (it got taken down before I got a picture) and has some Austen silhouettes pasted to the pages. Another one was hung in the dining room above the table. I've yet to get any of my artwork unpacked, so it looked good.
And, of course, we had to have tea and I brought out some of my vintage tea cups for the occasion. I also made up some little books from a download I saw at DearLille blog for some little Austen books. I used another thrift store copy of Sense and Sensibility for that project.
I made a couple very yummy quiche for dinner. We had a Spinich Ricotta Quiche and a Ham and Swiss Quiche along with some rolls and corn soup.

Lastly, my amazing mother, made the two of us some Regency era dresses.
All in all, it was a very fun night and I think the theme was a fun one! I gave away some copies of the Keira Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice and some Barnes and Noble gift cards for prizes.

Now... to start thinking of a theme for next year.... =)

Book Review: A Wreath of Snow by Liz Curtis Higgs

    Book Details:
Title: A Wreath of Snow: A Victorian Christmas Novella
    Author: Liz Curtis Higgs
    2012, Waterbrook Press
    ASIN: B007SYQ4K6
    Genre: Historical Fiction, Christian Fiction

    Book Summary:
All Margaret Campbell wants for Christmas is a safe journey home. When her plans for a festive holiday with her family in Stirling crumble beneath the weight of her brother’s bitterness, the young schoolteacher wants nothing more than to return to the students she loves and the town house she calls home.

Then an unexpected detour places her in the path of Gordon Shaw, a handsome newspaperman from Glasgow, who struggles under a burden of remorse and shame.

When the secret of their shared history is revealed, will it leave them tangled in a knot of regret? Or might their past hold the threads that will bind their future together?

    My Review:
I don't like to give spoilers, but I'm not sure how to do that with this short little novel. This was a sweet story. For being a short novella, I felt that the characters were very well developed and that there was a lot of substance to the story line.

Margaret is a schoolteacher and she has traveled home from Edinburgh to spend the holiday with her family. Unfortunately, her brother is so negative and difficult, stemming from an accident he endured 10 years before, that she is on a train attempting to return to Edinburgh on Christmas Eve. An accident with the train occurs and in the aftermath she meets Gordon Shaw.

Gordon Shaw is also from Stirling, but he is only there to cover a story. He left long ago after a tragedy and has lived in guilt ever since. He is forced to face this guilt head-on, but will he be able to do it? And will there be forgiveness on the other side?

The only negative I would have, is that I thought some of the relationships moved faster than what I felt would be realistic. But, being as this is just a short story, I kinda feel like that should be overlooked. It would take a much longer book to bring about a more realistic relationship.

This is my second book read by this author and I'm thinking I will have to check out some more of her work.

    Currently...

    1. I just finished the second book in the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth. I can't believe I have to wait A YEAR to find out what happens. Seriously... this is why I usually wait until the whole series is out before I start reading it.

    2. I have a lot left to unpack from our move, but I've squirreled most of it away into the back bonus room so that Malachi is the one who has to look at it most of the time. =)

    3. I have been spending WAY too much time on Pinterest lately.

    4. I am planning a Jane Austen bunco party at my house next month - and getting super excited about all the fun prizes and food and decoration I'm going to have.

    5. Our new house has a fireplace with a mantle! I've been super excited to decorate it. Here's the beginning of my Fall mantle:
Oil lamp from Grandma's | Harvest jar candle | Picture of Malachi | 3 votives covered with burlap | Pumpkin
pillar candle w/ acorn & leaf ring from World Market | Two old frames from Grandma's | Malachi's baby
pumpkin from the Cider Mill | Hurricane holder from Partylite | Leaf garland from Dollar Tree
I have a burlap project to finish it off.... but I've either misplaced or used up all my burlap...

    6. I'm trying to get through the BBC's version of Jane Austen's Persuasion. Usually I don't like to watch a movie before I read the book, but Austen novels are the exception. I've decided the novels are so involved that it actually helps me keep it all straight to watch a movie first. So... the next book on my list is Persuasion, which will fulfill one of my Fall reading goals and 2012 goals. =)

    7. Last night I baked my first pumpkin recipe of the season - Banana Pumpkin Muffins. The recipe said it made 12 muffins, so I doubled it. We got almost 3 dozen muffins... hmm...

    8. My friend Lisa came over a couple days ago and helped me cut Malachi's hair with our clippers. I usually spend about $18 every couple months to take him to the local children's salon. He has a crazy cowlick in the back and it always grows out weird. I'm thinking I can do this... and save myself some money and cut the cowlick back whenever it needs it, rather than when I have the money. Apparently I need to get some thinning shears though....

Book Review: Twice A Bride by Mona Hodgson

    Book Details:
    Title: Twice A Bride
    Author: Mona Hodgson
Series: The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek
    2012, Waterbrook Press
    ISBN: 9780307730329
    Genre: Christian Fiction, Historical Fiction

    Book Summary:
Willow Peterson is at a crossroads. Standing alone over her father's fresh grave, she ponders the question she's seen etched on everyone else's face. Will this loss send her over the edge too, as her husband's death did? She has come back once from the devastating effects of loss, started fresh in Cripple Creek, Colorado, and might find her second chance at love working as a portrait artist for photographer Trenton Van Der Veer. With help of the spirited Sinclair Sisters, can Willow embrace God's plan to overcome her past and provide a home for her?

    My Review:
This was the first book I’ve read by this author – and also the first I’ve read in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series. I have to admit that at first I had a hard time connecting with the story because this must be at least the 4th book in the series. I felt that I should have known more about the other women in this book and was a little lost at first because I didn’t.

As I got farther into the story though, Willow and Trenton really captured my attention for themselves and I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. It was interesting to think about portrait painting from a photograph or how photographers would hire people to “colour” a photograph. There are also lots of moments with other characters to make it interesting and obviously continuing stories of the sisters from the previous books. This makes for a lot going on and if you can keep it all straight, then it’s pretty fast-tracked.

This seemed to be the last book of the series… it seemed that a lot of loose ends were being tied up at the end of this book. I enjoyed the novel, but would suggest to other readers that you pick up the other books in the series first. I felt like this was a series that really built upon itself and were not really meant to be stand-alone books.

Book Tour: My Name is Jake by Jennifer Turner w/ Giveaway!

    Book Details:
    Title: My Name is Jake
    Author: Jennifer Turner
    2012, Peaks Press
    ISBN: 978-1938032059
    Genre: Young Children's

    Book Summary (from Amazon):
My Name Is Jake is a colorfully illustrated, rhyming book centered around a boy named Jake. Each page leads the reader through an activity that rhymes with Jake. This book is perfect for a young child or an early reader, just beginning to put letters into words and rhyming them together.

    My Review:
My Name Is Jake is a sweet little children's rhyming book about a boy named Jake. Each page has one line that says something about and rhymes with Jake, like "We make sandcastles at the beach in the summer." or  "My family takes walks by the lake." Each phrase is accompanied by a lovely illustration like the one pictured above on the front of the book. My three-year-old son enjoyed the pictures and the story.

My only negative about the story is that the story line did not seem very cohesive. The story seems to start on a natural path, but then ends up kind of jumping all around. It mentions activities from Fall, Summer and Winter, but there is no Spring. It seems to start at the beginning of a day, but then it doesn't continue that way.

I'm not sure that those things matter much to a three-year-old though as long as it has fun pictures and wording. =)

Disclosure: The book was provided to me free of charge by Peaks Press  for my honest review. All opinions in this post are my own and I did not receive any other compensation.

    Fall Into Reading 2012

    Fall Into Reading 2012
This is my 3rd year joining up with this low pressure reading challenge. This event runs September 22 - December 21st.
Want to join the fun? Visit Callapidder Days for the details!

Last year I didn't make it though my whole list and I'm not going to be too crazy with my list this year. Having a three-year-old and a new baby kind of kills most of my reading time. One thing I'd like to do is read a Jane Austen novel I haven't read yet though. That was part of my 2012 Goals, so I could get two things done at once.

    My list:

    • Finish - The Strong-Willed Child by Dr. James Dobson
    • Finish - Unlocked by Courtney Milan
    • Awakening by Karice Bolton
    • Persuasion by Jane Austen (2012 Goal book)
    • Home Improvement by Charlaine Harris (this one has been on my shelf for awhile)
    • Divergent by Veronica Roth (this has been on my to-read list forever!)
    • Out for Blood by Kristen Painter (currently pre-ordered!)
This seems like a very small and sad list compared to my previous FIR lists. But I'm hoping that's it's doable. =)

    Time to Read?

Ha! That last book I reviewed took me a month to read! I started it before Zachary was born and just finished it. I had been on the verge of finishing it for a couple weeks at least, but just couldn't get those last couple chapters read.

I have four more books on my shelf that I've committed to reviewing for various publishers.... it's going to be pretty sad if I can only get through one each month! I just had to restrain myself from ordering another for review.... I figured I'm far enough behind as it is without adding to it... but it was so tempting! I love to read so much that it's hard to turn down those opportunities.

    Aw well... starting the next...

    Reading Goal Progress 2012

I am excited to realize that I've made it halfway through my Reading Goal for 2012 which was to read 50 books this year! The part that worries me is that in one week I'm going to have a newborn baby.... and somehow I'm thinking that I'm not going to be getting the same amount of reading finished the second half of the year! Oh well.... I still have a week to get ahead - haha

Find my current reading list for this year on the sidebar or become my friend on Goodreads for more book reviews or previous reads.

Book Review: The Messenger by Siri Mitchell

    Book Details:
    Title: The Messenger
    Author: Siri Mitchell
    2012, Bethany House Publishers
    ISBN: 978-0-7642-0796-9
    Genre: Historical Fiction, Christian Fiction

    Book Summary:
Hannah Sunderland felt content in her embrace of the Quaker faith... until her twin brother joined the Colonial cause and ended up in jail. She longs to bring some measure of comfort to him in the squalid prison, but her faith forbids it. The Friends believe that they are not to take sides, not to take up arms. She is not allowed to visit him, even if she were able to secure a pass.

Jeremiah Jones, a Colonial spy, needs access to the jail to help rescue men important to the cause. Upon meeting Hannah, a plan begins to develop. Who would suspect a pious Quaker visiting a loved one?

But Jeremiah is unprepared for Hannah, for her determination to do right, to not lie. How can one  be a spy and not lie? Hannah, in turn, is surprised by Jeremiah... for the way he forces her to confront her own beliefs, for the sensitivity  and concern that he shows her despite the wounds he still carries.

    My Review:
This was a wonderful book. It was the first I've read by this author. It was rich in character details and story line alike. Up until the end, I was wondering if Hannah and Jeremiah were going to survive or if they were going to be sent off to the British prison ships to die for their treason!

There is so much going on in this story: Hannah's Quaker faith and whether she will be able to stay as a Friend, be disowned if she's found out, or will she end up walking away from her faith and family? Jeremiah's bitter heart and his ability to get past is physical and emotional war wounds from a previous life or not and his friendship with a British officer. Their plot to rescue the rebel prisoners from the jail. AND of course, the relationship  between Hannah and Jeremiah.

All of these plots intertwine and work together to make an intriguing story! I enjoyed the fact that the characters were believable and the author seemed to do a very good job of keeping everything in historical context throughout the book. And although it is a Christian novel, I thought the "Christian" aspects of it were very tastefully done - mostly in relationship to Hannah and her faith.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Civil War novels or historical fiction!

Disclosure: The book was provided to me free of charge by Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. All opinions in this post are my own and I did not receive any other compensation.

    Nice Days and Mommy School

The weather has finally warmed up around here and we've been trying to spend some significant time outside! I have discovered a park/wetland area next to our development and we've been taking lots of walks over there...

I'm back doing Mommy School again this month! I've felt so bad because I've been working so much and I've been so tired that Malachi and I haven't really been doing anything productive together. I feel like this has added to some behavior frustrations between us also. So.... regardless of my work schedule and how I feel, I decided I needed to DO something with him.
Since we just went to the zoo in April, I decided it would be fun to do the Z is for Zoo unit.

We're working on identifying the Letter Z and Number 6. He can usually count from 1 to about 13 or 14 pretty well, but his identification of the individual numbers is a little lacking.
We also have been doing some of the activities like this one where he identifies the largest or smallest animal. Or the tallest or shortest. Fairly easy for him now, but still fun.

We also got some new books from the library for this unit. Our favorites so far are:
    • I Love My Mama by Peter Kavanagh
    • Welcome to the Zoo! By Alison Jay
    • Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina
    • Curious George Visits the Zoo by H.A. Rey
Welcome to the Zoo is unique because there is no text. You can go through the book multiple times and pick out something different to look at or focus on each time.
We were excited to find a copy of Caps for Sale at my grandma's house the other day when we were cleaning it out!
